Real mermaids – are they fact or fiction?
The question has puzzled sailors, scientists, and writers and poets ever since the earliest days of sea travel. The truth is, in this day of high tech equipment and underwater cameras and submarines, we are no closer to knowing exactly if mermaids exist or not.
One of the pieces in this puzzle comes from realizing that many sea creatures can, at times, grow to have human like characteristics. Sea Cows can mutate to have very human looking features because, as mammals, they once lived on land as monkeys, and ony later returned to the sea. Humans, too, can grow in the womb with fused feet in a process known as Sirenomelia. Our earliest ancestors were sea creatures, and it is for this reason that babies can be born that look identical to the mermaids depicted by sailors and artists from the past.
If this can occur in people in cities, how much more could it happen in isolated ocean communities, in islands and peninsulas away from the towns we have today? And if a group of these babies were born and lived in the seas, what if they formed families and reproduced, continuing and perhaps developing this condition. It would certainly help them survive when the main source of protein was fish and looking for food underwater.
People are always fascinated by the stories, legends and mythologies of mermaids speculations about real mermaids continue to exist. People for ages have been looking for real live mermaids that seeing sea animals like the Manatee, or sea cow, are often mistaken to be real mermaid sightings. Other creatures that are featured in the museums from the 1800’s are fakes, build to cash in for a curiosity with these magical creatures from the sea.
Such fakers would usually find a preserved body of a monkey, and a large fish such as a Groper or other reef fish. Using the taxidermist’s art, these two creatures could be combined to form one seamless ‘creature’. A clue to spotting these types of fakes is if the ‘mermaids’ are said to be only baby or pigmy mermaids. Full sized mermaids are too difficult to make, as monkeys only grow so large.
In 2005, a story of a “real mermaid” which was allegedly found in Chennai following the Indian Ocean Tsunami in December 2004 circulated in the internet.The story was backed up with pictures of the Legendary creature with mermaids tail which inevitably made people ask “do mermaids really exist?”.
According to Source, the body of the “real mermaid” is at the Egmore museum guarded under tight security. Does this prove that mermaids are real? The source claims that the mermaid called Kadal Kanni is a hoax like P. T. Barnum’s Fiji mermaid. Others are not so sure. All we can do is compile the evidence and let our science – and our imagination – take hold…

i don’t think this image is fake coz’ there was once a story in a newspaper from our area about two fishermen capturing a mermaid’s baby on their fishing nets. they even posted a picture of it in the newspaper and it has similar body features from this one.

This Is actually a sculpture they created for tourism * yes they have proven this* But mermaid do exist and shayanna, there is no working spell to make YOU a mermaid only the other way around, Mermaids have figured out a spell to walk on land with us. You may actually know one but never guessed it, and Sirens don’t exist, what your thinking of is when a mermaid sings is calling to the ocean to guide the boat, but sometimes it doesn’t happen quick enough and thus there is the legand that mermaids crash ships
I love mermaids,I want to become one of them to travel the ocean and be wherever i am in the world beneath,.. If this is true then mermaids should be free and they will never let anyone see them because they will be held captive and experimented and forever be in just a memory,. .. FREEDOM for all.

well i believe that mermaids are evil,not nice at all, not pretty looking at all, and that they eat meat.meat!We’re meat!.my mom friend believe that she have seen one before in Santa Cruise here ill tell you what happened.well first when she was walking she accidentally stepped on glass. then she went to go wash her feet next to a tree.after a while something started pulling her .harder and harder it pulled her,so then she grabbed the tree for hanging on it pulled her so hard that she was about to let go.in the water she saw a head of a women and the body of a fish tail.she then screamed and screamed for help but no one could help her.but luckily she found away to escape i don’t know how but she did and the lady that was about to die that time is still alive today.so everyone out there who believe that mermaids are nice pretty looking mermaids then you are wrong because one day when you see a real life mermaid you’ll regret saying all those kind things about them.

Omg this is so awsome i hav just recently tryed a mermaid spell but idk if it works yet. if it dosnt i need a spell that works so pls pls help me. ohh also if this dose work i wanna live with u guys. it has been my dream and i really really really wanna swim in the ocean make frinds with fish and everything else. and once i learn more ill return to the surface and put a stop to all the toxins that are going into the ocean. i will fight forever if thats what it takes so please someone reply. thanks alot for all uve done~ alex
That full-sized “mermaid” is actually a work of art created by Juan Cabana, he had created dozens of life-sized “mermaids” using various media…he has a website dedicated to his works and the works of similar artists, I suggest you take a look. That way you will be better able to determine whether or not the “mermaid” is real.

ever since ive seen like all those movies and shows about being a mermaid ive wanted to be one SO bad.i think its just an incredible esperience when ur swimming deep under water and you turn incredibly beautiful.(so ive heard) so if anyone can PLEASE tell me how to be one. and something that will make me half human and half mermaid.

I have lost all faith in humanity after reading this thread. I can’t honestly believe anyone in their right mind would believe in mermaids, think they were a mermaid, or ask for a spell to become one. Seriously, how logical is it that mermaids, who supposedly live in the water, are on the internet? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that you people believe in mermaids with the way you write. Obviously, not too much intelligence all together on this thread.
